never finished reading the book eventhough i bought it a year ago. still i wuld think that it didnt come off as well as it should have..the only performance of note was by paul bettany as the fire juggler..cool name but i cant remember it.

Still special effects were good but helen mirren was a bit wasted in her role.

i love my local dvd seller…he recommended this before it won all the awards and it was bloody clear to boot. the story itself was interesting withe the quiz questions as plot device to tell his life story…the real killers was strong performance overall from a mix of basically unexperienced players.

its a testament to teh director to be able to craft a story and get the performances he did.

And also i like the fact that ar rahman finally gets some kind of international recognistion for a stellar career… a indvividual voice in the industry that has been able to mix western and eastern influences without selling out.

DVD : Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Cool movie …good looking likeable babe and a down & out charlie brown character…..plus an unforgettable turn by that brit playing the rock star aldous snow….i loved him…

story line not very original but still i’dd buy that for a dollar….

School Holidays

Its the school holiday season and i brought the kids to lot of movies

BOLT (good begging but dragged on in the later stages)

BEDTIME STORY (So so …Rob Schnieder was there)

IGOR (nice in jokes about igor vey similar to terry pratchett take on Igors)

THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL (K Reeves being his normal wooden self)

YES MAN (good one this)

THe only movie i refused to bring my kids to was Cicakman 2: dunia hitam)

Cable : Winter Solstice

Saw this 2 part series on cable and actually liked it a lot. Its a soppy Danielle steel like story but it had a few interesting characters and loved the fact they had vivien leigh of “Gone with the wind” fame. It was a family drama, a bit of romance and what not and the inevitable christmas eve coming togther conclusion.

i would put it in the same categoy as that hallmark Gay Sinise and Natasha Richardson vehicle ” angeli on something something…..or rather…

DVD : Bodie of Lies

Saw this last night at home. interesting enough story but came away feeling that this story had nothing new to say nor a new way to tell the story. Came off as a mish mash of variuos recent spy movies. Performances were good but as usual arab characters wee stereotyped…i suppose it was fairly close to the book.

One thing i could never figure out was how Leo’s character could hang around arab neighbourhoods in cognito while looking very very un arabic. Irrespective of the fact that he spoke arabic and could quote the quran he stood up like a sore thumb.

Like “The Kingdom” with Jennifer Garner and Jamie Foxx i wondered if arab cities were really as lwless as they are made out to be….

OK if there was nothing else on..but i wouldnt rent it…\\

DVD5 : The Women

Chick flick with a cast excellent women actors …you can recognise almost all the faces that came on screen. Meg was …..Meg ….but i liked that Messing gal. …and what is it with the mandatory lesbians in chick flicks nowadays ….

And the poster looks so bloody fake …..

DVD4 : Pathology

What a sorry excuse for a movie. Initially i thought ot was a good enough premise but execution was lousy. This Milo guy is good looking enough but there is only so much brooding you can take in one movie. They even gave top billing to Allysa Milano for what….15 minutes of screen time ….she didnt even get to do the obligatory scream before she dies… talking about death ,,, there was alot of that ,,,lost of blood…corpses…sharp edge weapons etc…well it is entitled pathology.

Word of advice ….there was a lot of sex in my dvd copy …lots of tits …but not the kind that turns me on …actually its a bit sick ….the lead characters are a sick bunch of wierdos pathology students who go about inventing new ways to kill people and then actually doing it. It was a bit like CSI but without the investigative fun…. a bit like SAW but without the gory bits. YOu did get people bing cut up AFTER they are dead which is gross and pointless.

Watching this movie make me kind of miss Quincy MD….remember that one?…..

C2 : The Bourne Trilogy

Tonight i just completed the Bourne identity after watching the Bourne Ultimatum and that second one over this long weekend. Chronologically that sucks, but that’s they way of the world … Matt Damon was ok but James Bond he is not…..action moves was ok but he didn’t have that Bond flair for dramatics or quips ….The 3 movies all look the same and on reflection after watching all three and the adrenalin has lowered..there’s not much in terms of new plot development from movie to movie…..I hear they might be making a 4th and i wonder why????

Recommended if the wife has to wash her hair this weekend…

DVD3 : The Dark Knight

Saw this on DVD…I was waiting for a clear copy of the movie from my friendly neighbourhood DVD seller but had to go all the way to Jakarta to get a good copy. I finally sat down to watch it (interuppted by my kids barginng in to show me their art work). I am not really a fan of the batman movie franchise..i like the comics more..grew up on it during the 70s and dropped out in the late 70s and came back at university days in the late 80s.

Batman return was cool enough, but if you had read batman year one (the comic) it basically covered the same ground and identical scenes. I was hoping for something new. Suffice to say …..Heath Ledger as the joker was well worth the publicity. It was fresh , dark and insane …reminds me of the “Killing joke”. This was not the clown of the of 60/70s batman comics, nor the jack nicholson over the top performance. This was a measured brilliant turn by heath ledger…virtually unrecognisable in makeup nor in voice or demeanor…this joker was not Heath Ledger..but an entity in itself. A force of nature, an unstoppable insane criminal…..This was your average serial killer, jason , freddy kruger all rolled into one and multiplied …he was not the kind of person you wanted to meet in a dark alley….

Recommended viewing ? yes …..Only gripe is that they have to make more interesting femail characters ….all Rachel Dawson just doesnt cut it ……i suggest the bring back the woman the batman married …the daughter of Ras Ah Ghul. That wuld be interesting…..
